Ancestral Modernism
Elements 2021

These are posters for a concert series by composer and percussionist Ying-Hsueh Chen. The series sees Ying-Hsueh and accompanying musicians explore a range of instruments from different cultures and eras.

The concept was based on the idea of travelling through these eras, as if digging down through geological layers. Each of the musical elements (metal, stone, strings, stories and wood) was assigned a symbolic pattern and, following the drawing from left to right, each layer’s depth is defined by it’s presence throughout the four concerts.

The design was made as a whole and then split into it’s separate parts, each image appearing online and as printed posters and double sided flyers.
